Sustainability – We Can All Play A Part

Being sustainable helps to improve the quality of our lives. We want to make sure that we have the resources needed for our children and grandchildren in the future. Sustainability means that our future generations will have finite number of resources that are used conservatively. There are a number of sustainable living tips that we can apply to our everyday lives to aid the mission of saving the earth and reducing the negative impact on the planet.

The benefits of being sustainable

There are a number of benefits to being sustainable. The primary benefit is that it ensures our future. Wherever in the world we live, we will all be impacted by climate change its negative effects so we all have an obligation to each other and future generations. When we focus on being sustainable, everyone gets to benefit and live in healthier, clean-living conditions. Ultimately, our society will benefit from improved air and water quality, less landfills and more renewable energy sources. If you are committed to sustainability, you can reduce your carbon footprint and we can manage the amount of toxins released into the environment, helping to keep us safe.

What we do

There are a number of things that we can do in order to contribute. Here at Central Extrusions, we produce our mouldings and extrusions from Dryflex Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE). This means that the extrusions have the same properties as synthetic rubber and are also completely recyclable.

We look into our waste management by recycling and reprocessing all of our waste product in house and therefore produce zero manufactured waste resulting in a smaller carbon footprint. Our policy is to conduct our operations in a manner that is environmentally sustainable. Despite the fact that business activities do contribute to the environment in some way, we think it is important to be responsible and limit these contributions in as many ways as we can so the environmental impact is positive and least damaging.

Over time, we have made conscious decisions to reduce or waste from the manufacturing process and invest in recycling materials to help with reducing our carbon footprint. To learn more about our environmental policy and what our commitments are, click here.

What you can do – sustainability and recycling tips

There are easy tips and steps we can all follow in order to live more sustainably every day. Following these steps does not mean that you will have to give up things or reduce your quality of life at all! It may actually make you feel happier knowing that you are contributing to a better, stable world. Unfortunately, thousands of animals die every year because of plastic. Cutting down on your plastic waste by avoiding plastic made products and using reusable bags will help to reduce the amount of plastic left in the ocean harming animals. Since plastic is non-biodegradable, it ends up in landfills unless they are recycled and reused. Try to opt for more plastic free products to help. Another tip is to recycle. It’s so convenient and easy to do so, just make sure to have a recycle bin in your home and business, its minimal effort and helps the environment. Lastly, try to cut down on driving as much as possible, at least for short distances. It will help reduce carbon emissions, therefore saving the environment. You may opt for an electric car but if not, you can bike, or run or walk. It’s a great way to get exercise and reduce how much you need to rely on transportation that has a negative impact on the environment.

Central Extrusions manufacture and supply extruded and injection moulded glazing products, serving the Midlands and the rest of the UK. If you are in need of extrusions, get in touch with us on 01385 413 222.

What is a Window Gasket?

Window gaskets are a fantastic way to give windows added protection from the outside elements and stop draughts and other nuisances from entering into homes. But what exactly are window gaskets and how are window gaskets used? Our guide takes you through everything you need to know about window gaskets. A window gasket is typically a strip of rubber that is fitted to a window frame between the glass and body panel to create a secure seal. Window gaskets can help weather seal a window and protect homes.

How Do I Know if a Window Gasket is Needed?

Windows, like many other areas of the home, may need attention over time. Older windows may start to let in draughts or damp leading to higher heating bills and a nuisance mopping up the excess water. If you are considering window gaskets, you may start noticing excess sound from entering the home through gaps in the windows. If your current window gaskets are faulty, you may also notice water gathering on the windowsill or feel a draught coming from your windows.

What Types of Window Gaskets Are There?

The good news is that there are a variety of types of window gaskets available to fit your windows perfectly. The main types of window gaskets include bubble gaskets, E gaskets, flipper gaskets and wedge gaskets. Each of these is a slightly different shape to fit your window type. Bubble gaskets, for example, are a curved shape and sit between the window frame and the opening of the window in order to form a weather seal on your window. Wedge gaskets are commonly found in UPVC windows and fit windows to form a tight, weatherproof seal to keep adverse weather out of the home.

How Do I Fit a New Window Gasket?

Fitting a new window gasket is usually quite straightforward. To start, simply remove part of the existing window frame and take a look at the type of window gasket you will be replacing. You should then choose the right type of window gasket to match, paying close attention to your measurements. Once you have measured the space and found the correct window gasket and size for your window, press the new window seal down into the space between the window glass and frame until it has formed a tight seal.

Central Extrusions Supplying Quality Wool Pile

Wool Pile has many different names for the same product. It can be called pile weatherstrip, weatherstripping, brush pile, brush strip, wool pile or Wool Pile. Confusing isn’t it? All these names refer to the same product. At Central Extrusions we call it woolpile or Wool Pile. Whether it is a domestic or commercial project, a dynamic or static application, Wool Pile from Central Extrusions is designed for use with many of the leading aluminium glazing or uPVC glazing systems in use today.

Woven and extruded Pile can be supplied with and without a fin. Either option provides an effective barrier against air, water, dust and noise. The pile seals even and uneven surfaces to prevent ingress of air, water, dust and noise. The pile spreads to prevent a soft barrier that goes right up to the frame of the door and window. They retain this ability for many openings and closings or sliding of doors and windows. Over time the pile becomes worn and compressed and starts to lose its effectiveness. This is the perfect time to replace it.

Wool Pile from Central Extrusions has a polypropylene backing. This semi-rigid backing makes them easier to install into around window and door frames. This easy-to-fit Wool Pile slides into the frames around doors and windows to prevent draughts. It helps to reduce heat loss by excluding draughts and protecting against freezing temperatures outside on wintry days. In fact, they are sometimes called draught excluders by some of our private customers.

Our pile is available in a variety of heights & base widths. They are designed and manufactured to be compatible with most of the leading window and door systems. Our Wool Pile is sold in metre lengths in reels to trade customers. Retail customers can order it cut to length to fit a specific door or window.

Central Extrusions specialise in matching the requirements of all customers using aluminium system in particular. We supply trade customers such as glaziers, fabricators and joiners as domestic or residential customers looking to do their own repair and replacement.

What are Wedge Gaskets?

There are many types of the gasket. These include bubble gaskets, flipper gaskets, E gaskets and wedge gaskets. They all play a particular role in an aluminium system. In this article, we will be taking a look at the wedge gasket, the role it plays, and what it’s advantages are. It is important to understand it’s function and how it can improve performance.

A wedge gasket is a type of gasket is, as the name suggests, wedge shaped and come in many shapes and sizes. Many windows and doors use a wedge gasket to seal the frame and glass and protect from water ingress. They are also effective at eliminating draughts. Draughts occur when there are spaces that do not prevent cold air from coming through, or prevent the hot air from leaving home. Cooler air comes in as a balance between the two and creates a draught. You fit a wedge gasket by pushing it between the glass in the window or door and the actual frame for the glass. This creates a tight seal around the window. It prevents the cold air from getting in, as well as the rain.

About wedge gaskets

Wedge gaskets are used to fill and block any gaps. They create a compressive seal which keeps out the cold air and keeps warm air in. They seal the glass and keep it steady to ensure a water and airtight fit. They also reduce any instability which improves safety. Wedge gaskets can encounter problems. The most common problem is that the seal is used over and over again. Over time this wears down the seal. It starts to disintegrate and tear in places, making it nowhere near as effective. Another problem is if mould begins to form. Mould can damage your wedge gasket and reduce it’s effectiveness. These kinds of issues can make the entire door or window look shabby and tired. They can also fail to ensure that cold air doesn’t get into the property. However, the good news is you can replace them, and this is easy enough to do. All you need to do is remove the old one and then push the replacement gasket into place with your hands. Wedge gaskets create tight seals around windows or doors. They protect from the loss of heat and warmth in the building. They also keep the elements out, particularly water. Wedge gaskets are powerful tools to seal glass in a frame or reduce heat loss, but they’re also prone to get worn.

Range of Wedge Gaskets

At Central Extrusions we recognise this. We are proud to offer you a range of wedge gaskets to suit all kinds of windows and doors. You’ll never need to worry about replacing wedge gaskets again. We strive to provide you with the best in high quality gaskets. We are confident that you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for.

Gaskets & Seals For Aluminium Systems

With aluminium systems with doors and windows, you need the right gaskets and seals to suit the profile. Yet, getting the correct seal for your needs can be difficult. To help with this, we’re taking a look at the types of gaskets and seals for aluminium systems available. We will look at how they will improve performance and be effective.

Bubble Gaskets

First up on our list is the bubble gasket. This is used for both doors and windows. They are designed to stop draughts which may come in. They also help with the reduction of noise from the outside world. One way to tell when a gasket needs replacing is when you hear a whistle through the window. When that happens, it is a simple task of removing the old gasket and replacing it with the new one.

Wedge Gaskets

The versatile wedge gasket is another product which is suitable for aluminium systems. A wedge gasket is an integral part of the design of a window or door. Not only does it help to seal the window, it acts as a buffer to prevent the glass coming into contact with the frame. The wedge gasket is always located on the inside. If you put it on the outside, then the glass can be removed. The wedge gasket locks the window beads in position and keeps it secure.

E Gaskets

E Gaskets create a seal between the glass and the frame. E gaskets are easy to fit are easy to fit and push into position. They may need replacing because of shrinkage, gradual disintegration, or the effects of mould. These factors reduce the performance of the gasket. This in turn can lead to misted glazing units if not dealt with.

Low Sightline Gaskets

Low SightLine Gaskets have the advantage of sitting low in the profile. This gives them a crisp, non-intrusive finish. Another advantage of this type of gasket is they are easy to keep clean.

U Channel Gaskets

U Channel Gaskets are extruded from EPDM or neoprene rubber. U Channels are available in a wide range of profiles shapes to suit specific window systems. They are used as a protective edging on the aluminium or uPVC profile to receive the glazed unit. They are also used as trim and are very economical to install.

Gaskets and Seals Range

Overall, these are a few of the gaskets and seals you could be using for your aluminium based systems. The type of gasket which you choose is down to preference and suitability. Each type of gasket has its strengths and qualities. Combining different types of gaskets in specific configurations can improve performance. Central Extrusions has a broad range of Gaskets and Seals for Aluminium Systems available. We are proud to be able to offer you our full range. You will be able to reseal your doors and windows when the existing gaskets start to become worn from use.

Looking for a Bespoke Extrusion?

There will be instances where you need to get a custom extrusion for use in a specific system. That’s not a problem as we can create them for you. We’re going to take a look at what the extrusion is, and then how we can make a custom extrusion for you.

So what is an extrusion?

Not everyone is aware of what an extrusion is, and why it is important. Extrusion is a process used to create objects that have a certain design or pattern to them. A custom extrusion is used to create certain profile shapes. The extrusion process creates the perfect shape for use in the selected system.

How do you make a custom extrusion?

If you’re looking for a custom extrusion, then you have come to the right place. Central Extrusions have developed a six stage process. This has been designed to deliver the best possible custom extrusions possible. Firstly, we begin with the design process. We look carefully at a whole range of factors. This includes the function of the extrusion, it’s effectiveness, and the cost to produce. Next, we move onto the stage of creating the tool to make the extrusion for you. Once that has been done, it is then a question of setting up for samples. They are rigorously tested to ensure they are fit for purpose. We always create the highest quality extrusions for you.

Designed for excellent performance

Before full production we make sure that any modifications suggested are made. If there’s been a major overhaul, the extrusion is then put back through testing again. This is to double check and triple check the quality. From there, the tool goes into our manufacturing centre. We will then produce the extrusions you need. Once the order has been fulfilled, and the extrusions are ready for you, we will despatch via courier. The entire process is straightforward and has been perfected over the years. We only supply extrusions which are designed to offer excellent performance.

Extrusion Design and Production

If you are looking for custom extrusions, then you’ve come to the right place. We have years of experience within this industry. We have a tried and tested procedure for creating high-quality custom extrusions. A custom extrusion is vital to ensure it is exactly the shape and design that you need it to be. If you have a very specific requirement you may find it hard to seek a pre-made extrusion which works for you. If you need a custom extrusion created, then you’re in good hands. We strive to provide you with the best extrusion service possible.

Your Introduction To Bubble Gaskets

Bubble Gaskets serve a particular role. They are instrumental in keeping door and windows sealed and watertight. Yet, not everyone is aware of what a bubble gasket is. To help with this, and clear up any confusion, we’ve put together a short introduction to bubble gaskets.

So, what are bubble gaskets?

To begin with, let us take a look at what a bubble gasket is. Each gasket has a distinctive shape. A bubble gasket has a doomed or curved top hence the name. A gasket is used on either a window or a door. Gaskets are placed between the part of the door or window that opens, and the frame of the window or door. The top bubble compresses when the door or window is closed. This often referred to as a compression seal. This seal ensures that there is no space for dirt, water or draughts to pass between the two.

Usually, you’ll find yourself replacing the bubble gasket when it has become worn out. It is unable to provide a sufficient compressive seal. This is often due to a high number of compressions taking place. Every gasket has a lifespan and wear and tear comes into play. You don’t need an adhesive or any particular tool to fit one. Instead, you’ll find that the bubble gasket just pushes into place with ease into a channel. This makes it an easy to replace part of the window which provides an airtight and watertight seal.

A bubble gasket is not much different from a flipper gasket. The primary differences is the shapes and sizes of the two types of gaskets. Both perform similar functions. Different gasket styles may be more effective in various types of windows or doors. They all cut down on the number of cold spots and places where heat can escape a room.

When should I replace bubble gaskets?

The best time to replace a bubble gasket is when the compression seal begins to fail. You’ll notice that the gasket will stay active for a long time. At some point the pressure and constant use will become too much. The gasket will fail to return to it’s former shape and will be far less effective. You’ll begin to notice that the heat will escape the room, or there is a draught. That is the perfect time to get a new bubble gasket.

The bubble gasket is an important component. It ensures that you can keep the warm air in a room and prevent any cold spots from becoming an issue. The seals will need replacing now and then, so you’ll need to get a new gasket. That is a small price to pay for creating a proper compression seal between the frame and the door or window. Replacing a bubble gasket will ensure that hot air does not get out and cold air does not get in. Replacing the glazing gaskets before the winter months is ideal. This is when keeping hot air in will mean the difference between feeling warm or chilly.

We supply a full range of glazing gaskets including; Flipper Gaskets, Bubble Gaskets, E Gaskets, Low SightLine Gaskets, U Channel Gaskets, Wedge Gaskets.

Woolpile Creates an Effective Barrier

Woolpile from Central Extrusions is designed for use on many of the leading aluminium glazing or uPVC glazing systems in use today. Woolpile, which is sometimes called brush pile or weatherstripping, provides an effective barrier to air, water, dust and noise in doors and windows. The fibres in the woolpile are perfect for creating a seal between different or uneven surfaces.

Woolpile is typically used on secondary glazing (which is the addition of a second window to an existing window), aluminium windows and doors, sliding windows and patio doors. The pile should give a good seal when the door or window is shut but allow it to open easily.

Excellent Range of Woolpile Available

Our pile comes in varying depths and widths. Central Extrusions has a range available in the following base sizes; 4.8mm, 5.1mm, 6.7mm, 6.9mm, 11mm, 16mm and 18mm. Our pile is available in a range of colours and heights as well as fin or non-fin versions. This gives our customers an excellent range of choice and we have options to fit all the popular systems.

Woolpile Stops Dust & Reduces Noise

Woolpile is designed to eliminate dust, reduce noise, keep out rain, cope with varying temperatures and the friction associated with opening and closing doors and windows. It is very durable but it does have a lifespan so will need to be replaced when it becomes less effective.

Although woolpile is hard-wearing and durable it can need replacing over time. It starts to lose its spring and the seal becomes less effective. You may notice that the brush pile on the bottom of a sliding door has become misshapen and distorted. This is when you should consider replacing the woolpile on the unit – particularly in high traffic areas.

Eliminate Draughts and Save Money

According to the energy.gov website making the effort to seal air leaks in a draft house can result in a 20% saving on heating and cooling bills. Over time the effort taken to fix draughts in doors and windows should result in lower bills. The Energy Saving Trust is also keen for homeowners and businesses to look to eliminate draughts in buildings. If ‘draughts are uncontrolled: they let in too much cold air and waste too much heat’. They estimate that draught-proofing could save up to £35 per year.

Central Extrusions are a UK based glazing gaskets specialist providing a custom extrusion manufacturing service. We supply many variations of woolpile to both Trade and private customers. All woolpile is supplied in boxed reels. We also supply a range of glazing gaskets including; Flipper Gaskets, Bubble Gaskets, E Gaskets, Low SightLine Gaskets, U Channel Gaskets, Wedge Gaskets.

If you would like to know more about our range of woolpile, or would like a sample to try before installing, get in touch with us via the contact form or call 01384 413 222.

flipper4

An Introduction to Flipper Gaskets

Flipper Gaskets from Central Extrusions are designed to fit many of the leading aluminium glazing or uPVC glazing systems in use today. They are supplied in many shapes and sizes and used to seal around doors and opening windows to eliminate any drafts. The flipper element of the gasket moves to seal the gap to prevent air leakage.

Replace Failing Flipper Gaskets

Flipper Gaskets are used when fitting new windows, or to replace failing gaskets in windows already installed. Many customers purchase our flipper gasket to replace worn weatherseals where the gaskets have lost some of their flexibility. They can also shrink or simply start to break apart. Often this is due to the number of compressions undertaken when doors and windows are open and closed.

They are simple to fit and are just pushed in between the glass and the frame. No adhesive is required to fit, the gasket simply pushes into place. Gaskets provide an air-tight seal to the window. The main purpose of any gasket is to stop draughts or rain ingress. When fitting any of our gaskets yourself we would recommend using gasket cutters or shears to give a clean precise cut.

Flexible Gaskets with Longevity

Glazing gaskets are manufactured from a range of materials that offer flexibility to return to their original shape, have good longevity, are less likely to shrink and are UV resistant. These materials include EPDM, TPR and PVC.

Customers Can Order Online

We principally work with Trade customers but also offer our gaskets for sale via our online store to private customers. Our Flipper Gasket is sold in 20m lengths or, if you require more, by the reel. Simply find the appropriate gasket and add to your basket. Please note, gasket is non-returnable but we do offer a matching service for private customers before you purchase. Gasket Manufacturing Specialists

Central Extrusions are a UK based glazing gaskets specialist providing a custom extrusion manufacturing service. We manufacture many variations of glazing gaskets including; Flipper Gaskets, Bubble Gaskets, E Gaskets, Low SightLine Gaskets, U Channel Gaskets, Wedge Gaskets as well as Pressure Plates, Security Tape and Woolpile.
